WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW…

About keeping natural hair

Not only are there lots of naturalists a.k.a the natural hair gang, but also a mass number of people who are thinking of transitioning from relaxed/permed hair to join this community and others who keep short hair and have decided to grow it out natural so they can rock the afro, twist outs, high puff, natural curls. So here are a few things you should know about keeping natural hair.

  • SPENDING REASONABLY ON HAIR PRODUCTS

Natural hair isn’t always the easiest thing to groom as the bonds of each strand such as the hydrogen and di-sulphide bonds work synergically with themselves making your hair less manageable and a little challenging to work with. As such, you are going to need some products to ease the whole process. (a list of products every natural should have will be uploaded in a future post). Apart from easing the process of your hair routine, some products are refined to help detangle, strengthen, shine and moisten your hair.

  • THE FRUSTRATION

Yes! Natural hair could get frustrating from time to time especially if you transitioned from relaxed hair to natural hair. Then, managing your hair was somewhat easy and now it seems like you have a wrap-ball of hair on your head! Sometimes you don’t even know what to do with it and your hand aches from combing so much while the hair is shedding, probably from a wrong hair routine and you’re running out of products when you’re broke and so on but that’s just mentioning a few problems we face.

  • PROTECTIVE STYLES ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS

As a natural, it is only wise that you give your hair some time to breathe after weaving it out for a long time. This reduces breakage from over-manipulating or heat damage. There are a number of protective styles to flaunt:

Twists

Corn rows

Braids

Sew ins (that aren’t too tight)

Locks

Flat twists.

  • DRAMATIC CHANGE IN HAIR REGIMEN

Are you a natural who transitioned from relaxed hair? Then you would clearly understand what I’m talking about! You realize you are so careful in everything you do; combing, detangling, washing, even making the hair. You might even begin to check components of hair products before purchasing! Yes girl! You can’t put in so much effort just to have the hair ruined by negligence.

  • YOUR HAIR WILL TAKE A LOT OF YOUR TIME

An example is a typical wash day. From pre-shampooing to shampooing and conditioning to deep conditioning to protein treatment and for combing, working in sections from the tips gently to the roots. Yeah! All of that! It takes time, energy and patience.

  • MISSING RELAXED DAYS

For those days where you’ll see a sister on relaxed, straight hair and you’ll be feeling like a pineapple (lol). Her hair dangling from her shoulders, whipping from side to side and you have your fro stuck on your head and you fear to silk press it because you fear for heat damage. Plus how manageable it was for you back then.

  • YOUR HAIR BECOMES YOUR CROWN

Above all odds, your resources, hard work and patience finally pay off as your hair flourishes, shines, grows longer and you pull off killer styles. People are wanting to touch your hair and one thing naturals are used to are compliments. When next someone tries to discourage you from growing your hair all natural, remember that in the end, results beat all odds.
